A new year often creates space for new goals. For those considering a future as an interpreter – or for those already working as an interpreter without formal qualifications – The Bilingual Test (Tospråktesten) in spring 2026 may be an important next step. The test not only documents linguistic competence, but also opens the door to further qualification, more assignments, and greater confidence in the professional role.

Why The Bilingual Test Is More Important Than Ever

Interpreting in the public sector is a regulated field. Under the Interpreting Act (tolkeloven), clear requirements are placed on the use of qualified interpreters, and public authorities are obliged to prioritise interpreters with documented competence. This means that the demand for qualified interpreters is increasing – and will continue to increase in 2026.

The Bilingual Test is the first formal step in this qualification pathway. It is designed to ensure that interpreters who proceed to training and assignments have a solid linguistic foundation. For interpreters, this provides confidence in their own competence. For clients and public authorities, it ensures quality and predictability.

What The Bilingual Test Actually Gives You

Passing Bilingual Test is not just about “having taken a test”. It provides concrete and long-term benefits.

First, it gives you access to the course Tolkens ansvarsområde (TAO). This course provides essential knowledge about the interpreter’s role, ethics, confidentiality, and professional responsibility – knowledge that is crucial in situations where misunderstandings can have serious consequences.

Second, passing the test and completing the TAO course makes it possible to register in the National Register of Interpreters in category E. Being registered in the interpreter register is an important milestone. It makes you visible as a qualified interpreter and is often a requirement for receiving assignments in the public sector.

Furthermore, this opens the door to progression towards higher categories over time. The higher the category, the stronger your position in the competition for assignments – and the hourly rate is usually higher. For many interpreters, this means more bookings already from 2026.

Practical Information About The Bilingual Test in Spring 2026

You can now apply to take The Bilingual Test in spring 2026. The application deadline is Monday, 2 February 2026, and the test will be conducted between March and June.

In spring 2026, the test will be offered in the following languages: Arabic, Bengali, Berber, Dari, Estonian, Georgian, Hebrew, Cantonese, Kinyarwanda/Kirundi, Kurmanji/Badini, Lithuanian, Pashto, Polish, Russian, Somali, Tagalog, Tamil, Thai, Tigrinya, and Ukrainian.

The test is oral and consists of short sequences read aloud in Norwegian and the interpreting language. You must accurately reproduce the content in both directions. You are allowed to ask for one repetition per sequence, but no aids may be used.

The Bilingual Test is demanding, but achievable with proper preparation. It requires good Norwegian language skills and confidence in the interpreting language, including in more formal contexts. Many candidates experience that focused practice in advance provides significant benefits.

There is still time to prepare for the test in spring 2026. And if you feel that the timing is not quite right yet, it is entirely possible to use the year to further strengthen your language skills and aim for the test in the autumn. Taking the test when you are ready gives you the best foundation for success.

An Investment in Yourself and in the Interpreter Role

For interpreters who want more assignments, greater predictability, and professional confidence, The Bilingual Test is an investment in personal development. It marks the transition from informal language assistance to a professional role with clear requirements – and clear opportunities.

2026 can be the year you take the next step as an interpreter. The Bilingual Test gives you access to knowledge, qualification, and a market where quality is prioritised. Whether you are ready now or choose to use the time ahead to prepare thoroughly, this is a choice that can open new doors – both professionally and academically.
