Our mission is to bridge language and cultural barriers to create understanding and inclusion in society. At heart, our goal is simple: that everyone is understood. Being understood is a human right. We believe everyone deserves access to information, guidance, and, most importantly, the chance to be heard — no matter their language or background. At TolkeNett, we are deeply aware of our social responsibility. We work tirelessly to ensure equal access to support for all. This principle is a foundation of our company, and we take pride in contributing to a more inclusive society.

Our journey in interpreting begins with our story. In 2003, the Hafzullah sisters founded an interpreting agency created by interpreters, for interpreters. They knew that true quality lies not only in the service provided but also in caring for the interpreters themselves. From a modest two-person office, we have grown to become Norway’s largest and fastest interpreting provider.

You don’t realize how vulnerable you are until you find yourself in a new country and cannot understand what is being said. When Hawin and Helan arrived in Herøy as refugees, they experienced how the lack of information and qualified interpreters could undermine both safety and dignity. They saw the system fail — and decided to do something about it.

1992

TolkeNett begins in a small office with a simple, yet demanding idea: to make everyone understood.

2003

The breakthrough comes when TolkeNett becomes a provider for three major hospitals: Aker, Ahus, and Ullevål. There are many assignments, the margins are small, and everything must work when it matters most. Good intentions are not enough — quality must be delivered in every single assignment. What started small now requires a structure capable of carrying the weight of responsibility.

2006

TolkeNett becomes a limited company. Structure, capacity, and quality assurance become the tools that make it possible to be present — even as the pace increases.

2009

TolkeNett takes responsibility for all hospitals. The conversations become more numerous, but every assignment is still about the same thing: making everyone understood.

2016

TolkeNett begins delivering interpreting services to NAV — where language and understanding have a direct impact on work, benefits, and rights.

2021

The invasion of Ukraine abruptly changes life for many, and within a short time thousands of people in need arrive at Norway’s borders. The demand for interpreters arises almost overnight, and TolkeNett increases the recruitment of Ukrainian and Russian interpreters to meet an acute societal need. It is no longer about planned agreements, but about reception centers, trauma, and immediate needs. When systems are under pressure, linguistic safety must be delivered.

2022

We invest in technology to be part of tomorrow’s solutions — and to protect what truly matters. When we develop digital tools, it is about giving clients better overview and safer workflows, and about providing interpreters with clear frameworks and working conditions that make it possible to deliver quality, even at high speed. This is how we build an interpreting service that lasts — also in the future.

TolkeNett and The Norwegian Transparency Act

TolkeNett complies with the Transparency Act, which requires us to actively obtain information from our suppliers and share our work with the public. In 2022, the Transparency Act was introduced to ensure good working conditions and that supplier chains respect human rights.

The law promotes respect for fundamental rights and decent working conditions, and imposes requirements for transparency on how this work is carried out.
