State-authorized translations

We provide certified translations carried out by government authorised translators licensed by the Norwegian authorities. A government authorised translator, known in Norwegian as a statsautorisert translatør, has passed the national authorisation examination in translation and is qualified to produce translations with formal legal validity. Certified translations, also referred to as official or sworn translations, are required in particular when documents are to be submitted to foreign authorities or institutions that demand formal verification.

When Is This Required?

In certain situations, a certified translation is required for a document to be considered valid or to be processed further. Requirements vary between countries and institutions, so it is important to clarify what is needed before placing an order. If you are unsure, standard document translation is sufficient for many purposes.

Certified translations are commonly required for:

  • Studying abroad
  • Working abroad
  • Family immigration and marriage
  • Legal proceedings
  • Official documents intended for international use

1. Submission of document:

Documents can be sent directly to oversetting@tolkenett.no. Please attach your documents and include all relevant information — source and target languages, deadline, and purpose — along with your full name (and any name transliterations if applicable) and your phone number with Vipps. If the documents contain sensitive information, we can provide a secure upload link for safer transfer.

2. Assessment and quote:

Once we receive your documents, we assess the scope and any requirements for a state-authorized translator. You will then receive a quote and an estimated delivery time. The assignment only begins after the offer has been confirmed and payment received. We will send a Vipps payment request that must be approved before the translator can start work.

3. Completion and delivery:

The translation is carried out by a qualified translator in accordance with applicable requirements and quality procedures. If the recipient requires the translation to be performed by a state-authorized translator, the document will be delivered with their stamp and signature. Delivery takes place within the agreed deadline, normally within 2–5 business days. If the document is to be used abroad, notarisation or an apostille may also be required. Read more about that process here.
